The number of patients we see with neck pain never ceases to amaze us.
Here at Hazeldean Family Chiropractic Clinic, neck issues are a regular occurrence. And, as we have explained to you in the past, a misaligned cervical spine can lead to far more than just headaches and neck discomfort.
Many people we see have been in motor vehicle collisions. When there is a whiplash-type movement in the spine during impact, neck pain is typically the most common complaint.
Keep in mind that it requires very little speed during a collision to be afflicted with whiplash-type injuries to the spine and soft tissues. As you likely know, pain and other symptoms may not surface until days or even weeks after a crash.
Whiplash Injury
And herein lies the issue: Even after a whiplash-type injury occurs, the absence of immediate neck or back pain can give a person a false sense of security; he or she may believe they are in the clear.
However, according to a 2000 study in the Journal of Epidemiology, patients who had suffered a whiplash injury were capable of experiencing symptoms for as long as seven years after the accident. Seven years!
It’s horrifying to think of someone suffering needlessly for that length of time due to an injury that had long since past. Whiplash-type injuries can do major damage to the proper curvature of your cervical spine. Initial subluxations continue to worsen. Disc degeneration begins to occur. Combine that with years of going unchecked, potential bad habits such as bad posture and/or overuse of digital devices … you could have a disaster on your hands.
