Daily Habits for a Calmer Life

happy woman with arms out in mountainIn our fast-paced world, it’s easy to find ourselves constantly in “fight or flight” mode, dominated by the sympathetic nervous system .However, balancing this with the parasympathetic nervous system, often called the “rest and digest” system, is crucial for our overall well-being. Here are some simple but often overlooked daily habits that can help you support and activate your parasympathetic nervous system.

1. Regular Physical Activity – Walking, yoga, and swimming come to mind as these activities release endorphins, which can enhance good mood and relaxation. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity most days of the week.

2. Adequate Sleep – Create a bedtime routine that promotes relaxation (reading a book, taking a warm bath, or doing some gentle stretches). Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to allow your body and mind to fully recover.

3. Meditation – This doesn’t have to look any particular way. You can incorporate quiet moments of mindfulness and reflection on a walk in nature or while eating a meal more slowly than usual. You may also try a guided meditation if this appeals to you – these are freely available online.

4. Social Connection – This is vital for our mental and emotional health. These days we often find ourselves separated from friends and loved ones by a screen – meaning we communicate digitally more often than in person. Make time each week or month for social connection, as this can reduce stress and promote a sense of belonging and relaxation.

We’d love to hear how you incorporate these habits, or others, in your daily life. Small additions of these types of behaviours can lead to big changes in our state of mind and physical health.
