Fall Activities

While we all seem to find ourselves busier during this time of year – new school and activity schedules for the kids and prepping for the holiday season – it’s important to maintain your physical activity!

Fall is a great time to be outside!

Fall is a great time to be outdoors. The scenery is inspiring, and the cooler temperatures allow for increased cardiovascular workouts without the draining heat. Get the family involved in as many outside activities as you can. If there’s an orchard nearby, go apple picking. Long walks with a family pet, or even a brisk stroll to get the blood pumping after dinner is always a good choice.

Of course, there’s always plenty of yard work to be done during these months – raking leaves is a great physical activity while still enjoying the outside weather.

Whatever you choose to do, always remember to warm up prior to heading out. Gentle shoulder rolls and arm circles will help to loosen your upper back. Bring your elbows up, and twist across your body from side to side.

Don’t forget about that lower half, as well. Quadriceps stretches, as well as giving both of your calves a good stretch with lunges will help those legs to warm up.

Finally, remember to make all activities enjoyable by staying comfortable. If you’re raking leaves, bend down with your knees to pick up those piles – never bend from the waist. Enlist a helper to carry extra heavy or unwieldy bags, and take breaks whenever necessary. If walking is your activity, be sure to wear a comfortable, supportive shoe that cups your heel and provides the necessary arch support.

Keeping active throughout the fall months will help you to feel better, maintain a healthy immune system and reduce stress. It’s a great way to ensure that you’re feeling your best before the snow flies, so get out there and enjoy yourself!
