Do you ever wonder if the fruit or vegetable that you buy at the supermarket is really organic? I know I have! I’m already a regular label reader, but I’ve also become a regular “sticker checker”. Fruits and vegetables have stickers on them with a four or five digit price look-up code (PLU code). These codes help the supermarket identify their products, taking the guessing game out of the equation. This is especially important these days with the growing number of organic products; an organic banana looks just like a non-organic banana.
A conventional fruit or vegetable will have a four digit code (i.e. #4011 banana). An organic fruit or vegetable will have a five digit code, starting with a 9 (i.e. #94011 organic banana). A genetically modified fruit or vegetable will have a five digit code, starting with an 8, but as far as I know, to this day, they are not legally obligated to report if it was genetically modified… scary! (I will talk about genetically modified foods in a future post.)
