Give your body a chance to do what it already knows how to do…without drugs.
Everywhere we turn these days, we are reminded of the role that prescription and over-the-counter medication plays in our society. It has become virtually impossible to avoid.
As a multi-billion dollar industry, pharmaceutical companies possess the ability to bombard us with advertisements and “advertorials” on the capabilities of their products. While some people may require certain medicines as a result of a health crisis or emergency, it’s difficult to ignore the effect the availability these medications are having on our society as a whole.
A website run by Partnership for a Drug-Free Canada called “Secure Your Meds” is a stark reminder of how much things have changed. According to the site, 1 in 6 teens have abused prescription drugs – 70% of which obtained them from a home. Naturally, strong painkillers such as codeine and oxycodone feature prominently on the list of abused drugs.
As a Chiropractor, I’m concerned about this tragic trend because I know that if teens and young adults are already experimenting with drugs, the likelihood of them continuing to rely on chemicals to deal with health problems is much higher. We see people here at the clinic all too often who are using multiple prescription and non-prescription pills to “manage their health”.
Furthermore, as a parent, I am heartbroken to see the damage caused by these patterns of reliance on medications to fix what’s wrong. In my practice, I have seen too many children (and in some cases, very YOUNG children) already being medicated for things like acid reflux, pain, ear infections, and much more.
Chiropractic works as a natural way to help our bodies heal, thereby reducing, and often eliminating, the need for such strong medication. With it comes less pain, but so much more. Patients experience better sleep patterns, a restored sense of health, wellness, and hope for a better future. Every day, we experience such wonderful improvements from our patients. One of our male patients just told me that he’s able to shoulder check in his vehicle while driving – something he hasn’t been able to do in ages. Meanwhile, a new female patient informed us of the immense relief she’s experienced in her lower back, after only two weeks of adjustments. We can’t wait to see what else is in store for her!
Medicine, in some form or another, is a part of every day life, and no one is denying the necessity it often serves. However, with websites such as “Secure Your Meds” now being developed as a warning to families, it concerns us to think how many types of potentially harmful medication are within easy reach to our children and young adults. Is it that far of a stretch to consider with the reduced or eliminated need for medication via chiropractic, that these drugs would become far less available in our homes?
